This past April 24th the project “NO MORE TRASH! We want a clean park and wetlands rich in biodiversity and responsible care of pets” was launched in an event that included participations from regional and communal authorities, neighborhood associations and representatives from CIFAN, The GAAP and YOSUSTENTO.

The goal of the project is to improve the life quality of the community surrounding the wetland located between three big neighborhoods from Valdivia. To learn more about the project click here.

The GAAP was invited to be a part of the project, as well as other organizations, each one of us contributing on what we do best. We will be helping on the responsible care of pets part of the project, but we’ll tell you more about it soon.

The project plans to have one event every two months where everyone in the community surrounding the wetland is invited. These events are mainly aimed at children, since one big part of the project is to educate on environmental responsibility, and what better than to start in young minds.

The first event took place right after the launch ceremony; everyone attending it rolled up their sleeves and got ready for a Wetland Cleanup Day! They all worked hard to clear the space form trash and waste, there was so much! Adults and children helped, carrying bags full of trash, old clothes and even a mattress. By the end of the day it was all clean, and everyone enjoyed a delicious fruit. To help keep the wetland clean, the children from CIFAN painted a bunch of beautiful signs that latter hung around it.

Then, on june 19th, it was time for the “Wetlands Bingo” where we learned about the plants and animals that live in the wetlands and that are now in danger because of the contamination. Dominique, from The GAAP, taught us about the Black-necked Swan, the Coypu and Ulmo. Everyone got a prize just for participating! Later we learned how to make ecological bricks with plastic bottles; you can even make a house with them! And, as we left, everyone received a tree to plant in our backyards (thank you CONAF!).

The next event will be in August, and The GAAP will be hosting it! Soon we’ll tell you more about it.
